Cheaper Alternatives to a Payday Loan

We are a lender telling you to check nine other things first. Most take a phone call, and several cost nothing at all.

Before borrowing at a triple-digit APR, there are usually two or three cheaper options that have not been tried. Some take a phone call. Most people skip them because they assume the answer is no, and the answer is frequently yes.

Nine options, roughly cheapest first

1. Ask the biller for a payment plan

Hospitals, utilities, dentists and repair shops all run payment plans, and they are usually interest-free. They are rarely advertised, so you have to ask. A hospital bill in particular is one of the most negotiable debts in the country.

2. Utility hardship and assistance programs

Most utilities operate hardship funds and can put an account on a levelised plan that spreads winter bills across the year. Dialling 211 connects you to local assistance programs for rent, energy and food.

3. A credit union payday alternative loan

Federal credit unions can offer PALs of $200 to $2,000 with an application fee capped at $20 and the APR capped at 28%. You usually have to have been a member for a month. Details in our PALs guide.

4. Earned wage access through your employer

Many employers now offer access to wages you have already worked for, sometimes free. Ask payroll before downloading anything. See earned wage access explained.

5. A cash advance app

Advances are typically $25 to $750 against your next paycheck, priced through a subscription and an optional instant transfer fee rather than a finance charge. Cheaper than a payday loan for small amounts if you skip the express option. See apps vs payday loans.

6. A credit card, even carrying a balance

Purchasing at 24% APR and carrying the balance for two months costs a few dollars per hundred. It beats a 391% APR loan comfortably. A card cash advance is different: expect a 3% to 5% fee plus interest from day one, with no grace period.

7. A small loan from an employer or a credit union you already bank with

Some employers run hardship loan programs deducted from payroll at low or zero interest. It costs nothing to ask HR.

8. Selling something or picking up a shift

Unglamorous and often faster than it sounds for a gap of a few hundred dollars, with no repayment attached.

9. An installment loan

If the gap is real and the cheaper doors are closed, an installment loan at 59% to 199% APR still costs far less than repeated payday borrowing, and the balance actually falls.
